You Were My Hero
Overview
Mark is asked to assist two strangers in dealing with an enigmatic villain. Allen discovers an unexpected new ally while Nolan struggles with his identity elsewhere in the galaxy.
The plot
Rae and Rex grudgingly head out to go grocery shopping, but their routine is cut short when a monster unexpectedly shows up. In the meantime, Mark gives the Guardians the badly damaged remains of a robot that had been pursuing his family. Mark suspects Cecil and confronts him because the robot is too damaged to reveal its origin, but its construction suggests substantial resources were used.
Mark then sneaks into the Pentagon to look for answers, but when he doesn't find any, he leaves quickly, Cecil still keeping an eye on him. When Drop Kick and Fightmaster, the two men who stole the Declaration of Independence, enter Paris through a glowing portal from the future, the situation gets even more heated. They ask for help during a planned date with Eve.
Mark is taken through the portal to a future where America has been reduced to a devastated wasteland, even though he initially refuses. Before a widespread uprising broke out, a once-effective ruler in that timeline gradually spiraled into insanity by enforcing strict laws and requiring labor camps. Bringing Mark into direct conflict, the future heroes had stolen the Declaration in an attempt to stop this ruler, Immortal, whose extraordinary strength required someone of equal power.
Mark is forced to face Immortal after being taken prisoner and brought before him. After a bloody battle, Mark decapitates Immortal to end his life, giving the people back control but leaving him feeling torn.
Allen the Alien is still detained at the Viltrumite facility in another location. He tries to convince Nolan (Omni-Man) to join the rebellion because he is determined to change the direction of the war against the Viltrumites. At first, Omni-Man accepts his fate, but Allen steps in to stop him from being put to death. Allen also saves Battle Beast, whose desire for battle fuels the chaos as fighting breaks out throughout the base. The conflict that ensues after two Viltrumites are found attacking Nolan compels Omni-Man to step up his efforts.
Following the defeat of one Viltrumite, Allen reiterates the significance of allies supporting one another. Then, implying that Omni-Man's loyalty may be shifting toward the rebellion, Nolan reveals that there are less than 50 pure-blooded Viltrumites left, a closely-kept secret that accounts for their tactical advantage. He also says that reinforcements are not coming.
