Severance Season 2 Ending Explained
Adam Scott, star of Severance, and Ben Stiller, executive producer, have discussed the implications of Innie Mark's shocking decision in the season 2 finale for season 3. Gemma (Dichen Lachman) was finally freed from Lumon by Mark (Scott) at the end of Severance season 2, and she was sent outside via the emergency exit. But before leaving, Innie Mark decides to stay with Helly (Britt Lower) after having a change of heart. Red lights flash and alarms blare all around them as the pair runs down the halls of the severed floor in the episode's final scene.
In the closing moments of the season 2 finale, Stiller and Scott discussed Innie Mark's choice of Helly over Gemma in an interview with USA Today. The executive producer described how Innie Mark's feelings are more significant to him than his outie's desires, and how the innies have evolved into their own people. In response, the series star said it makes him "free of this servitude," indicating that he will attempt to live without regard to the goals of others. Below is what they had to say:
Ben Stiller: For a long time, we knew that was the end. We briefly considered ending with Mark looking between the two, but it was obvious that I didn't want to leave the audience on a cliffhanger after Season 1's conclusion. This always seemed to be Mark's innie's default course. What we wanted to accomplish in the second season was set up in (the Gemma-focused) Episode 7 so that you would feel conflicted and heartbroken, with some viewers saying, "Yeah, I'm with him; go with her," and others saying, "I can't believe he's doing that."
Adam Scott To end it on such a note would be unusual and cruel. The scene where Mark and Helly run through the hall and the music is so entertaining that I'm so happy we ended there. He is at last completely escaping this servitude, initially to Kier and then to Lumon.
Ben Stiller: [H]is goal is to stay alive. At the end of the day, he knows what that choice is to go out that door for his friends and for him, and he doesn’t necessarily trust what outie Mark says.... [The innies] are starting to mature. In Season 1, they're kind of kids and in Season 2 (they’re) more like these rebellious adolescents who are coming into their own. Are they going to revolt against Milchick, who’s having his own crisis of conscience in his relationship to the company? There are a lot of unanswered questions. It doesn’t feel like it was the happy ending. I don’t think a severed person is a natural state, and what we’re looking at in Mark is a person who is split. The idea has always been about Mark becoming whole, accepting his grief, until something like that happens.
In his explanation of the conclusion to Entertainment Weekly, Scott underlined the significance of Innie Mark's decision. Even though "it's heartbreaking" to watch Gemma lose her husband to his other self, the actor said that it was "a no-brainer" for Innie Mark. Below is what Scott had to say:
Adam Scott: I mean, it should go without saying for Innie Mark. However, it's not that hard; in fact, I believe that emotionally, it's obvious, but rationally, they considered the situation and came to the conclusion that "You should go," but their hearts told them otherwise. As I watch it, I feel terrible for Gemma, but I think it's one thing for Innie Mark and Helly. It's obviously devastating. Outie Mark was also pulled out from under them, even though they were finally right there. I'm not sure; I feel conflicted about it because I consider it to be a two-pronged decision. And it will eventually come to a head when you share the same body but have conflicting interests.
The Implications of Innie Mark's Choice for Severance Season 3
When Severance season 3 rolls around, Innie Mark's choice to remain on the severed floor with Helly will have serious repercussions. Their behavior suggests that the innies will attempt to remain in the Lumon building for as long as possible, especially when Dylan (Zach Cherry) gathers the marching band innies to corner Mr. Milchick (Tramell Tillman). With no assurance that reintegration would still permit him to exist, his decision was already alluded to in his conversation with outie Mark at the beginning of the episode.
If the other characters in Severance are unable to control the severed floor, the decision will have serious repercussions. The core innies have no choice but to remain on the severed floor since Mr. Drummond (Darri Ólafsson) is dead and Cold Harbor has been foiled; otherwise, they run the risk of going extinct. In order to avoid practically dying by leaving the building in season three, they will need to figure out a way to stay down there since Innie Mark picked Helly over Gemma.
Our Analysis of the Season 2 Finale of Innie Mark's Selection of Helly in Severance
Since Mark's rescue mission concludes season 2, there is no clue as to Lumon's reaction or what it means for innies when season 3 starts. However, if the company is able to forcibly remove everyone from the building, it could spell unintended disaster for the protagonist's innie because he and Helly have decided to be together on the severed floor. There is no way to predict what long-term effects his decision will have because Severance season 2 is still continuing to unfold.
