John Wick 5's Status Confirmed
According to Lionsgate executive Jenefer Brown, John Wick 5 is still in development, even though Keanu Reeves has not changed his mind about the fate of John Wick or his place in the franchise. The plot of the franchise revolves around the adventures of a legendary, once-retired assassin (Reeves), who is reluctantly forced to return to the life he attempted to abandon. John Wick: Chapter 4, the final installment in the franchise, was released in 2023 and featured the assassin's final battle against formidable enemies in France.
According to ComicBook.com, Brown, who is Lionsgate's Head of Global Products and Affairs, spoke to the website about the John Wick franchise's future. In addition to Ballerina and a number of other productions in different media, Brown acknowledged that a fifth John Wick film is in development without responding to Reeves's repeated assertions that he had no interest in playing the part again. See the following for Brown's response:
This world keeps getting bigger and bigger in amazing ways. Naturally, Ballerina, our first spin-off film, is coming up next, and we are eager for it to be released. Naturally, we've revealed that a fifth John Wick movie is in the works. I believe there will be more spinoffs, TV shows, and video games in the future.
The Potential Significance Of Lionsgate's John Wick 5 Plans For The Future Of The Franchise
There aren't many possible paths for the character because Reeves is adamant about not wanting to return to the role after the character's definitive conclusion in John Wick: Chapter 4. The character was given a fitting end and buried, breaking the cycle he had become stuck in, even if the studio had the option of recasting. A prequel could be developed by recasting with a younger actor, but audiences would undoubtedly be skeptical of any continuation without Reeves.
The production made significant progress on its path to the big screen thanks to Reeves' personal interest in the first film and his relationships with Chad Stahelski and David Leitch. Beyond what many other actors have had the chance to do, Reeves played a significant role in the franchise as not only a star but also a crucial voice in molding the character into who he is. As a result, many prospective returning fans might be turned off if Lionsgate handles the character carelessly beyond Reeves's involvement.
Our Perspective on the Future of John Wick
There is already a lot of room for development in the John Wick universe without Reeves's help or the appearance of John Wick. Although Reeves will play John Wick in Ballerina, the story will be driven by new and supporting characters, and The Continental demonstrated that a prequel could be produced without going beyond Reeves's belief that Wick's past should never be revealed.
As a result, many people are torn about Lionsgate's intention to re-release the character, viewing it as merely a hasty attempt to make money. John Wick 5's potential success is uncertain given Brown's response, which suggests Lionsgate is keen to leverage the property into new media by prioritizing quantity over quality. However, after seeing that other characters in the universe can attract viewers, Lionsgate may reconsider their plans if Ballerina and the Donnie Yen-led Caine spinoff prove to be successful.
It may be difficult to sell John Wick 5, regardless of how good it is.
John Wick 5 Although having good action would help make the film "worth it," this does not imply that it will be simple to defend its existence. The conclusion of Chapter 4 was nearly flawless and left little opportunity for the plot to continue, even though the John Wick series has yet to let fans down in terms of follow-ups. Although John's passing may have been bittersweet, it is hard to think of a different conclusion for a character like him. John's passing also meant that some stability would return and that his friends would be safe.
Regardless of how many new things it does, it may be difficult for John Wick 5 to stand out in a time when there are so many reboots, sequels, and movie worlds. Interestingly, given how independent the first film was, the same could have been said of John Wick: Chapter 2. But not only did the sequel prove its worth, it also put the franchise in a strong position to receive additional installments after John was excommunicado. However, the task in John Wick 5 is perhaps more challenging than the one in Chapter 2.
