Heart Eyes Ending Explained

Who Is the Real Killer?

Beneath the gory exterior of slasher horror, Heart Eyes is a surprisingly sweet romantic comedy that ultimately sets up an endearing conclusion.  Josh Ruben's third horror-comedy, Heart Eyes, centers on the masked serial killer who preys on couples on Valentine's Day.  The movie follows Mason Godding's Jay and Olivia Holt's Ally, Heart Eyes' most recent targets, as they attempt to elude the killer and make it through the night.  The main characters in Heart Eyes also gradually fall in love throughout the story.  In the midst of the blood and guts, the movie follows them as they develop a strong bond.

Heart Eyes shares certain genre quirks with franchises like Friday the 13th and Scream, and like many of its predecessors, it has a lot of self-aware horror fun with them.  This includes some fake-out revelations about the killer's real identity and the reason they initially targeted Jay and Ally, even though they weren't romantically involved.  In addition to making a meta-comment on the nature of horror movies and laying the groundwork for sequels, Heart Eyes' ending plays with the clichés of both genres.

The Real Identity of the Heart Eyes Killer Revealed

The Heart Eyes climax's major twist reveals the actual reason behind the Heart Eyes murders and how several people have been covertly donning the mask.  The majority of Heart Eyes is devoted to tracking down Ally and Jay, seemingly effortlessly traversing impossibly long distances.  This is due to the fact that there are three Heart Eyes killers.  The most notable is Detective Shaw, one of the detectives pursuing the murderer and initially presented as a legitimate authority figure.  In the climax, Shaw confesses that she and her husband assisted in starting Heart Eyes' nationwide rampage, despite her secret murderous desires.

Ally met David, her husband, in passing earlier in the movie.  Despite his public image as a dorky IT worker, Shaw met David online and found that he shared her passion for murder. They married, and their romance led to them murdering their way across America.  Heart Eyes is primarily run by the two of them.  They enlisted a "fanboy" to assist in their slaughter once they arrived in Seattle.  At the climax, when they defeat the murderous couple and kill them both, Ally and Jay learn the truth about the pair.

Why Ally and Jay Are Targeted by the Heart Eyes Killer

In the movie, the Heart Eyes killer is introduced as someone who pursues couples as a kind of deranged pastime.  Apparently to satisfy the murderous desires of the married couple behind the mask, the holiday-obsessed Heart Eyes have been picking off couples nationwide on Valentine's Day for years.  At first, neither Ally nor Jay are on their radar, and they have no desire to pursue them.  In reality, Ally's ex-boyfriend, who was friends with another victim of Heart Eyes, is their intended target.

Heart Eyes appears to target shallow couples who appear to be in love, as evidenced by the self-centered and image-obsessed nature of the couple it killed in the opening sequence.  Although they first appeared to be planning to murder Ally's ex, their passion for Jay (actually a phony kiss Ally starts to make her ex jealous) persuades them to change their target.  The remainder of the movie revolves around that basic impulse, which explains why the killers target Ally and Jay even though they don't fit the typical victim's mental state.

An explanation of Ally and Jay's relationship

Heart Eyes' emotional core and plot are derived from the classic rom-com arc that Ally and Jay go through.  Many rom-com clichés are used in the film, including the unplanned conflict of interest and the accidental meet-cute.  The two appear to be attracted to one another at first, but Ally's defensive demeanor and Jay's almost combative charms put them at a disadvantage.  Even as they attempt to flee Heart Eyes, this persists, and Jay interprets Ally's attempts to do so as her leaving him to face her fate.

Jay and Ally gradually become more open to one another as the movie goes on.  While they are hiding at a drive-in theater, their relationship takes a drastic turn, and both characters reveal their weaknesses.  In the climax, the two solidify their bond by demonstrating that they are prepared to battle and even kill to save each other.  This brings us to the film's climactic scenes, which affirm that Ally and Jay maintain their happy romance and even become engaged a year after Heart Eyes' events.

What the Conclusion And Post-Credits Of Heart Eyes Signify For A Follow-Up

At first glance, Heart Eyes' mid-credits sequence appears to preview a possible sequel.  Similar to how Heart Eyes contacted Ally earlier in the movie's climax, someone calls her and uses a voice modifier.  However, Ally's best friend Monica, who had been mostly absent for the second act of the movie, then reveals that it's just a joke, upending this obvious sequel tease.  After being hung up on, Monica continues to tease her friend and is found to have been taking photos of their engagement.

This gag implies that Ally and Jay are no longer the target of a covert Heart Eyes killer.  With multiple jokes that make fun of the absurdity of the genre, Heart Eyes is a fun subversion of horror beats and clichés throughout.  This post-credits fake-out, which takes a standard horror movie sequel tease and turns it into another joke, is the best gag mocking the standard slasher format.  This beat seems to suggest that Heart Eyes, which is hinted at in the movie's post-credits and ending scenes, will not have a sequel.

The True Significance Of Heart Eyes

The genre mashup in Heart Eyes is a lot of fun, and the rom-com elements contrast surprisingly well with the slasher movie that surrounds them.  In the end, Ally and Jay both realize how important it is to open up to someone else in a relationship, as their original eccentricities and shortcomings give way to more trustworthy and vulnerable individuals.  Over the course of the evening, Ally and Jay gradually come to love one another and show that they are prepared to fight for each other against all odds if it means remaining together (and alive).  This is in line with the movie's romantic philosophies.

By emphasizing how much romance can be a fleeting attraction or a shared passion that can turn into something monstrous, Heart Eyes furthers this theme.  The relationship that blossoms between Ally and Jay is the only one that is highlighted in Heart Eyes and is suggested to be a healthy romance.  Even so, it is revealed that their early flirtations were just more manifestations of their shortcomings.  Ally and Jay are able to bond and grow strong enough to endure Heart Eyes by being open and willing to be vulnerable with one another.
